Alternative Methods to Health

Alternative methods to health and healing have been around for centuries and are complete systems of theory and practice. Some types of alternative therapies are Acupuncture, Aroma therapy, Chiropractic, and Massage therapy. Join us for a series of workshops to learn more about these methods. You can sign up for an individual workshop or the whole series. 6 Sessions.
$21 per session or $99 for the whole series.

Etch your indelible mark on the world! Memoir is the story of your life. In this course, you will Learn the tools, craft, and practices to enable you to write about the important moments of your life and transform them into a compelling story. You will embark on an adventure of self-discovery. You will learn to draw from your deepest held memories and turn them into a body of written work to share with family and friends. This class is designed for writers of all abilities. All you need is paper, a notebook, pens or pencils, and a sense of fun. 6 Sessions. Class size limited to 10.

Cake Decorating, Beginning 1/17 - Postponed

Learn to make “fancy” cakes and cupcakes that will impress your family and friends. Each week you will learn several new techniques. For the first session, you will need a batch of cupcakes, powdered sugar, small can of shortening, and any decorating tools you may have. 4 Sessions.

Cake Decorating, Advanced 2/28

If you have mastered the basics of cake decorating then this class is for you. You will learn to create life-like flowers and decorating like you see on professional creations. Bring basic decorating tools, bags, flower nails, wax paper, tinfoil, meringue powder, powdered sugar, large mixing bowl, hand mixer, and cookie sheet. 3 Sessions.

Cardmaking 1/15 - Postponed

Would you like to make a card for that special person in your life? You will have the opportunity to make several versions of Easter, Birthday, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day. Bring any basic tools such as, paper cutter, tape runners or glues, special ribbon or buttons, etc. There will be basic kits prepared for each project, along with a variety of embellishments. Materials fee: $5, payable to the instructor at the first session. 3 Sessions.

Chinese Cooking 3/4

Have you ever tried real Chinese food? Would you like to learn how to make Chinese food in your own kitchen? Sign up, join in, and have fun while learning. Have your friends register too. Creating a Terrarium 3/26

Put together your own mini garden with plants of your choice. Bring a container (ex: gallon glass jar) and 3 to 5 small plants. Learn the basic techniques to create a beautiful display. Materials fee: $5, payable to the instructor at the first session. 1 Session.

Creative Writing Group 4/11

Leave your lonely garret and come write in a community setting. Using Natalie Goldberg’s writing practices format, you will engage all your senses and write from the deepest part of your felt experiences. You will discover and explore your unique voice and share it with others. Bring a notebook, a pen and your sense of fun and discovery. 6 Sessions. Class size is limited to 10.

Dog Obedience 4/24

Basic Dog Training - Owners will learn to train their dogs using a praise and reward based training concept. Dogs and their owners will learn basic commands - come, sit, down, stay, wait, and leave it - and dogs will practice walking on a loose leash. Participants should bring a 6” cotton or leather leash, close-fitting collars, small, soft, dog treats. Dogs of all ages are welcome - puppies must be at least 4 months old and all vaccines must be up to date. (2nd person/dog: $25). 6 Sessions.

Fly Tying, Beginner 3/6

If you are a beginner with no experience or have some experience and would like to polish your tying skills, this course is for you. All materials and equipment will be supplied. If you have your own equipment and would like to use it, that is certainly acceptable. The first night will be an introduction to the equipment, materials and some basic knots and at least one pattern will be tied. On the following nights, 2 patterns will be tied using a variety of tying techniques. You should expect to have 15-20 flies at the conclusion of the course. If you have a particular pattern you would like to incorporate into the course, please talk to Don and he will accommodate those requests whenever possible. Materials fee: $15, payable to the instructor at the first class. 5 Sessions.

Grow Your Own Organic Garden 4/3

Are you concerned about the rising cost of food? Unsure what the term “certified organic” means? Interested in learning how to grow your own vegetables in a sustainable manner? Join us for a workshop on how to grow your own organic garden. We’ll talk about the basics of soil science, how to enrich your soil to produce healthy, high-yielding plants. The course will also cover the basics of making and using compost, the principles of crop rotation, and how to incorporate green manures and manage nutrients in the garden. Other topics will include how to tell the difference between cultivated plants and weeds, basic weed control strategies and common insects, pests and methods of natural insect control. Materials fee: $5.00, payable to the instructor at the first class. 3 Sessions.

Handmade Baby Toys 4/22

We will make a fabric book, stuffed animal and ball for little people, in all your favorite colors and textures. The first class will require a sewing machine, pins, scissors, a variety of fabrics, including a yard of muslin, any and all trims you may want to use, and some double stick fusible web for applique, as well as a heavy weight interfacing. Then we will get creative. 3 Sessions.

Jewelry Making, Beginning 1/30 - Postponed 

Learn to make your own accessories! Basic beading and stringing techniques will have you setting your own trends. Learn how to attach clasps, add charms and chain to your creations. Design single and multi-strand necklaces, bracelets, and stunning earrings. Each week builds upon the next to add creative, new design features to your projects. You can leave each class with a finished project for personal fashion or for fabulous gifts. For the first class you will need a bead board, 1 roll of beading wire, crimp beads, clasp, pliers and wire cutters. 6 Sessions.

Jewelry Making, Advanced 3/20

This course gives many more options to your jewelry making, such as bead weaving and the basics of seed bead stitches, even and odd count peyote stitch and how to work pattern from a graph. Basic tools that you will need: beading needles, Fireline bead thread (6lb), beading wire 19 or 21 strand, scissors, crimp beads, crimp covers, clasps, various tubes of seed beads size 11 and crimp pliers. For the first week only you will need 31 bicone 6mm cyrstals. 4 Sessions.

Karate 1/2

Enjoy yourself while learning self defense! Increase your confidence, respect, mental and physical endurance. Offered year round by Adult Education and the Bucksport Branch of Tracy’s Karate. Karate is a great family sport with safety and health issues a top priority. Experienced instructors. Give it a try. You can’t be too old, too big, or too small. Knitting and Crochet Basics 1/29 - Postponed

This class will show you beginning knitting starting with cast on, garter stitch, knit 2 purl 2, ribbing, knit 1 row purl 1 row, stocking stitch with a project to complete and how to read a pattern. Basic crochet would start with chain stitch, single and double crochet, and combination of these stitches. You will need 2 pairs knitting needles (size 7&9), 1 crochet hook size G, and 2 skeins worsted weight of yarn. 6 Sessions.

Leather Embossing 1/8, 2/5, 3/5, 4/9, or 5/7

You will make a belt and a key chain from scratch and from real leather, use the stamps, case the leather, cut the leather, put on the belt buckle and the belt saver, put on the dyes, the proper way to finish and dry. Embossing the leather can be done either manually or with a machine, both systems available. You may also learn how to cut lace for your own personal use and how to sew with an awl. A supply list is available if you wish to purchase additional items. Materials fee: $15, payable to the instructor at the first class. 2 Sessions.

Maine Driving Dynamics 2/5

New Highway Safety Laws create a mandatory automobile insurance premium discount for safe, mature drivers and require insurance companies to provide appropriate three-year premium discounts to drivers 55 years or older if they have completed a crash prevention course approved by the Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Highway Safety. 2 Sessions.

Pilates 1/10, 2/28 & 5/9

This beginner to intermediate mat class will promote core strength, improve posture, coordination, balance, and increase your breathing capacity by controlled flowing movements. Classes will include warm-up and breath work, mat series exercises, side series exercises, and closing. You will need to bring your own mat and wear comfortable clothes. 6 Sessions.

Quilting 1/28

In this class you will make a sampler quilt by making a variety of squares to combine in a quilt top. You will learn several techniques such as, piecing, paper piecing, simple applique, and Seminole patchwork. Please bring sewing machine, cutting mat, rotary cutter, ruler, thread (white or ecru), scissors, pins, 1/2 yard cuts (6-8) of coordinating fabrics (100% cotton), and 1 1/2 yards of white or muslin to use for the squares. Batting and fabric will be needed by the 5th class. 6 Sessions.

Scrapbooking 5/14

Novice? Never tried it? Not a problem. Don’t let all those photos sit in a box somewhere. Let us Guide you to create personal pages to celebrate the special times with family and friends. Self-Publishing for Maine Authors 2/28  - Postponed

Independent writers now have a whole new way of producing and marketing their books. Recent innovations in the rapidly-changing technology in printing have created a boom in self-publishing. Good books that don’t meet traditional publisher’s criteria can now be affordably printed and marketed by self-publishing authors. This workshop will outline some of the options both traditional and nontraditional, including what is offered locally. Students will discover how to get the technical assistance they need and explore the many types of organizations, printers, and publishers that work with Maine authors. Materials fee: $15, payable to instructor Jane Karker at the first class. 1 Session.

Hatha style yoga for ALL levels. Beginners are more than welcome. Yoga helps reduce stress, increases flexibility and strength, and also promotes relaxation.
