Ask This Old Maine House 10/14
This is a field-based course. The first class will be held in the classroom, and each subsequent week will be a “virtual” field trip to examine a different house. We will look at age and architecture of your old house, with a specific emphasis on applying green technologies to make your home more energy efficient. Students should come prepared to the second class with digital photos of their home showing any problem areas they would like addressed, or the ability to connect from home with a webcam. 8 Sessions.

Cupcake Decorating 10/23
Werewolves, Aliens, Pumpkins, & Turkeys – Oh My! Entertaining for the season or just doing a little late-night full-moon snacking? Learn how to make Howling Werewolves and Alien Invader cupcakes for a scary party or create a Friendly Turkey in the Pumpkin Patch to decorate our Thanksgiving table. You will learn easy techniques and how to decorate with items found easily at the grocery store. There is no expensive equipment or tips to buy. This class uses items you probably already have in your kitchen. We do all the baking and provide all the materials. Dress-Up Tea Party 10/2
Bring your child to our dress-up tea party for games, refreshments, and other fun activities. Children will play games for dress-up prizes and their own personal cake for the tea party. We will end the afternoon with plenty of refreshments for adults to join in with their child. Children under the age of 10 must attend with an adult. The Frog Prince suggests an age range between 4 and 8 years for maximum fun, but all ages are welcome. The materials fee is per child and includes one adult. Faith and Practice in Religions Around the World 9/16
In this study group, you will explore religious and secular tradition concerned with stewardship and reconciliation around the world. You will explore some of the causes of human violence against humanity and the environment which is sometimes expressed in religious fundamentalism and then move on to explore the spiritual dynamics involved in ministries of stewardship and reconciliation. Grow Your Own Organic Garden 10/6
Are you concerned about the rising cost of food? Unsure what the term "certified organic" means? Interested in learning how to grow your own vegetables in a sustainable manner? Join us for a workshop on how to grow your own organic garden. We'll talk about the basics of soil science, how to enrich your soil to produce healthy, high-yielding plants. The course will also cover the basics of making and using compost, the principles of crop rotation and how to incorporate green manures and manage nutrients in the garden. Other topics will include how to tell the difference between cultivated plants and weeds, basic weed control strategies and common insects, pests and methods of natural insect control. Medicinal Herbs of Maine 9/16
Delving into the intriguing world of medicinal herbs, you will learn basic, introductory, practical information that will prove immediately useful and that can be applied towards minor personal and family health care needs. You will study 20 common perennial herbs that can all be grown in a backyard garden or wild-crafted locally. The instructor will bring fresh and dried herbs from her gardens and woodlands for you to experience, informational hand-outs and several homemade herbal medicine formulations for sampling. For each herb, you will learn identification, study its properties, uses, energetic, safety precautions, taste, texture, fragrance, habitat, and how to preserve and store. Middle Eastern Dance 9/21
Join us for a class that is great exercise for young and old, big or small and find your inner beauty. Wendy performed with the Bangor Aminah Desert Dancers in 2000 and has taught beginner classes at dance studios in Bucksport, Orland, and Ellsworth. Class focus will be on learning basic movements and simple choreographies. Please wear comfortable, flexible clothing and bring water to class. Hip scarves are optional. We dance barefoot, so there is no need for special footwear. This is a beginner class and is appropriate for everyone regardless of experience, fitness level, or age. Learn About Chinese Art and Culture: In each class we will learn to use a Chinese paintbrush for painting and calligraphy. We will learn a few Chinese words, and we will read book or tell a story. Each month will have an added project. The classes will build on but not rely on each other. Sign up for whatever works for you.

Quilting: The Basics 9/13
You will be making a small lap quilt for this class. This class is intended for the real beginning quilter. You must have at least a basic understanding of the use of your sewing machine. The first night of class you will learn how to choose and combine appropriate fabrics and colors for your projects and why thread choices are important. You will learn the use of rotary cutters and other quilting tools. You will then be ready to have fun shopping for the materials you will work with for the remaining classes. A materials list will be provided. You will need to bring your project materials, sewing machine, and a good, sharp pair of scissors beginning with the second night of class. This class is designed to assist you with everything from choosing tools and materials to planning and completing your project. 4 Sessions.

You will build on what you learned in the Basics class while completing a seasonal project. You will need to bring your sewing machine, a good, sharp pair of scissors, and at least a yard of 4 different fabrics to the first night of class. You will build on the skills learned in the first two classes. We will be creating several smaller seasonal projects to give as gifts or for personal use. We will be learning new techniques such as Seminole patchwork and paper piecing, as well as some basic machine quilting. Self-Publishing for Maine Authors 12/2
Independent writers now have a whole new way of producing and marketing their books. Recent innovations in the rapidly-changing technology in printing have created a boom in self-publishing. Good books that don’t meet traditional publisher’s criteria can now be affordably printed and marketed by self-publishing authors. This workshop will outline some of the options both traditional and nontraditional, including what is offered locally. Students will discover how to get the technical assistance they need and explore the many types of organizations, printers, and publishers that work with Maine authors. Swordfighting for the Stage 9/13
The use of swords and other weapons in theatre and cinema has a long and exciting history. We will explore the foundations of theatrical swordfighting, with a special focus on safety. We’ll then take these foundations and apply them to a variety of sword styles that you might see on stage or screen, including the double-weapon form of rapier and dagger as well as the swashbuckling style of movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean and The Princess Bride. This class will be fun and educational not only for those in theatre, but for anyone who has interest in swinging steel, and a bit of a physical workout. All swords will be provided. Gloves of some kind are strongly recommended. 6 Sessions.

If you have always wanted to learn the basics of tennis, this class is for you. You will learn the forehand, backhand, serves, and net play skill strokes indoors on half courts. The only equipment you will need for this class is a racquet, can of tennis balls (3), comfortable clothing, sneakers, and water. Water Quality Workshop 10/6
Do you know that your drinking water is safe? If you have a private well, you are responsible for ensuring the safety of your drinking water. This University of Maine Cooperative Extension program is designed to educate and raise awareness on the importance of testing privately-owned well water. Topics will include taking care of your well, how to get your well water tested, and common well contaminants. Knowledge gained from this session will include why your well water may not be safe and how to insure that it is. 1 Session.

Zumba 9/7
It’s more than a trend, it’s a movement! Zumba has arrived in Bucksport. A Zumba workout mixes body sculpting movements with dance steps derived from cumbia, meringue, salsa, reggaeton, hip hop, mambo, rumba, flamenco, calypso, and salsation. The routines feature aerobic interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms. It targets areas such as the glutes, legs, arms, abdominals, and the heart. A Zumba class is not formulaic in that instructors often add their own music choices and choreographies to make their class presentation locally unique. Let’s face it, exercise has never been known to be much fun UNTIL NOW! Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked. Zumba is offered through RSU 25 Adult Education in conjunction with the Down East Family YMCA. Ages 12 and up. Ongoing.

ZumbAtomic 9/7 & 9/8
Kids love to crank up the music, shake, wiggle, and have a blast with their friends. So why not get fit while they’re at it? ZumbAtomic blurs the lines between fitness and entertainment with its many characters that were designed to be role models and its original music specifically designed for Zumba For Kids. Young dancers are given the opportunity to get into fabulous, kidtastic shape through repetition, great music, cool lyrics, and fun! In our class we’ll get those Zumba For Kids bodies moving with a fun warm-up! We’ll then move from song to song with the best ZumbAtomic music and routines. We’ll wrap up our class with a fun cool down. Dress children in light comfortable clothing, with socks and shoes (preferably dance shoes). Continue on to New England’s oldest mansion made famous by author Nathaniel Hawthorne, The House of Seven Gables. Day 1 – Saturday, November 6: Your two-day tour brings you to beautiful Newport, Rhode Island, where you will have a glimpse into Gilded Age living and where historical points of interest abound.
